Habit 1 – Set Your Target

Where to start is usually the biggest challenge for a new presenter. Even for experienced presenters, getting a plan in place, figuring out what to include and what to leave out isn’t that easy, even if you do know where you’re going.

However, a few simple steps can send you on your way. Start with the problem or opportunity. There’s always one of those. It’s the reason you’re doing your presentation. Then think about what your solution to the problem is. You also need to know who your audience is. More importantly, you need to know who the decision maker is. And, by the way, what it is you want them to do regarding your solution? In a nutshell, knowing these things will identify your objective and, simply put, your objective is what you need to target. We show you how to do all these things in a way that will be second nature from the moment you take this course.

Habit 2 – Get Under Their Skin

How to find out what your audience really wants to hear.

Your presentation belongs to your audience. Without them onside, you have NOTHING. So they are extremely important to your success. And that’s why this habit has the most impact on how to organize your material and what you’re going to say, in your presentation . . . and in all aspects of your life. The key thing you want to keep in mind is “what’s in it for them?”

To understand what they really want, you need to “get under their skin” – know how they think; what concerns them; what influences them. And you need to think about ways you can influence them BEFORE the presentation. A lot goes on behind the scenes in any presentation situation. It’s fair ball to get as much of an advantage before the curtain goes up. You can easily gain the upper hand and ensure your success long before you even walk in the room. We’ll show you how.

Habit 3 – Link and Lock

How to turn your audience’s concerns into benefits to bring them onside point by point.

By now, you know WHERE you want to go, you understand HOW your audience thinks and WHAT they’re concerned about. You also know what points you want to make in order to support your main idea. But, it’s critical that you link the points you want to make to your audience’s concerns. In order to get that “yes” at the end of the presentation, you need to respond to those concerns and put to bed any fears your audience may have. You do that by providing real benefits to your audience and then lock them in as supporters of your cause. It’s easy when you know how!

Habit 4 – Form Follows Function

How to select a form for your structure that will give you maximum impact.

Once you have your main points clarified, it’s time to work on finishing the body of your presentation! This is where the real content is. The body contains the foundation that supports your solution.

The body of your presentation can take one of several forms. It may flow from point to point, or may come in the form of a story. It may contrast your points with a previous or competitive situation. This module concentrates on determining what form the body of your presenation is going to take for maximum impact. At the end of practicing this habit, you’ll have the basic outline of your presentation complete.

Habit 5 – Windows and Mirrors

How to build a powerful opening and a targeted closing that will get you the results you want.

There’s a phrase in the world of presentations that goes like this:  “Tell them what you’re going to tell them, tell them and then tell them what you told them.” Well, Habit 5 is all about openings and closings. You need to have both.

We like to think of the opening of your presentation as a “window” . . . your chance tell them what you see ahead. At the end, tell them what you told them. It’s a look back at your key points – a “look in the mirror.” This keeps your audience on track. And it makes sure they get the point. There’s a way to structure both the opening and closing that will give you maximum impact. It’s a habit that once learned, you’ll never forget.

Habit 6 – Creative Clarity

How to make your presentation crystal clear and memorable.

Great presentations are not only crystal clear in their logic, but they leave a lasting impression. They leave no doubt as to the main point or the action required. And almost all use some kind of creative mechanism to grab your attention and hold it throughout.

Once you have the core of your presentation organized, it’s a good idea to take a moment to “stand back,” A second look often finds the common thread that runs through it. Then it’s easy to make that thread (or idea) your central theme that everything else supports.

Sometimes it’s a case of sitting back and closing your eyes till an idea pops into your mind. Other times, it’s a case of working with a group of your peers and using a white board to do a word association exercise. In this course, we show you how to use a commercially available program to provide you with powerful ideas that will bring creative clarity to any presentation.

Habit 7 – Watch Your Language

How to ensure your words motivate and spur your audience to action.

We’ve all heard presentations delivered to help us nod off. I mean it. Some presentations are written in “legalese” or something that seems like it. They use the passive voice and long, winding sentences to make the sense of it virtually impossible to decipher.

This habit will help you quickly identify the problem areas in your presentation and fix them. You’ll be able to spot a passive sentence from across the room and flip it into the active voice in a moment. This is the final polish your presentation needs to really stand out. But more than that, you need the right words in the right order so that your unique solution gets embedded in the minds of your audience.

Habit 8 – Graphics That Grab

How to build clear, targeted graphics that enhance your message.

You’ve seen them – slides that hit you like a sledge hammer – that make the point so clear, you wonder how they thought of it. You can have slides of your own that have a similar impact.

Habit 8 will cure you of putting everything but the kitchen sink in every electronic screen. “Less is More” is the key phrase you’ll learn to love. Cutting and slashing will become your favorite past time.

We’ll show you how to make your screens cut through the clutter and support your words and actions. This is the habit that is one of the simplest to learn but can have one of the largest impacts on how you come across.
